Toyota is one of the largest manufacturers of 4x4s, and their RAV4 model has been a firm favourite since first being produced in 1994. It’s long been popular here in the UK, partly thanks to how fuel-efficient it can be compared to other vehicles in its category. Originally designed to be a more compact and manoeuvrable model for the SUV market, it has seen several iterations, but it hasn’t been without its faults.
This month at Milner Off Road, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most common problems owners of the Toyota RAV4 have come up against.
RAV4 Cylinder Head Gasket Issues
This is a problem many owners of RAV4s made since 2004 have found. It is ultimately where the cylinder head gasket has failed due to the bolts being over-torqued. This, when combined with the extreme heat, can result in a variety of issues for your vehicle, but the best solution to the problem is to find a replacement cylinder head gasket and have it fitted to restore working order.
RAV4 Steering Wheel Issues
One of the most common complaints from RAV4 owners around the world is regarding strange noises coming from the steering rack. More often than not, drivers find there is an uncomfortable clicking sound when turning the steering wheel at full lock, with some drivers noting it happens more when turning at slow speeds. In more serious cases, some people reported the steering wheel failing altogether. For any steering wheel issues, it is best to get a mechanic to give you a professional diagnosis.
RAV4 Water Pump Failure
This next issue is one that drivers reported more commonly after around 25,000 miles. A failure in the water pump on the RAV4 has come up more than a few times and is usually accompanied by loud noises coming from the engine. This is something that would require you to replace the water pump in order to avoid any larger issues.
RAV4 Gearbox Issues
Slipping gears and a slight whining noise coming from the gearbox are two common RAV4 complaints. The gear slippage is a known problem and one that Toyota has tried to deal with by expanding the warranty they offer to cover more mileage, while the noise caused by your gearbox or transmission should be investigated further to find out the direct cause.
RAV4 Navigation & Audio Screen Issues
This particular issue doesn’t actually affect the safety of the vehicle, so might be considered more of a cosmetic complaint. Some RAV4 owners have found fault in the way that the navigation/audio apparatus has been installed, with the position of the screen being less than user-friendly thanks to the way sunlight hits it. It’s not something you’d be able to easily fix, and aside from adding a screen protector to limit the glare you get, the best advice is to test these things before purchasing to find out how important it is to you.
RAV4 Engine Light Issues
The purpose of an engine light is simply to signify that there is an issue requiring attention. RAV4 owners have commented that their ‘check engine’ light comes on during drives, typically at lower speeds. This issue is therefore hard to diagnose and could be due to a number of factors, but it’s always advised you get your vehicle checked out to be on the safe side — it could simply be a loose connection!
