Spontaneity and unpredictability - these are two things in life that can make things exciting. Just not when it comes to your motor. In fact, when it comes to your vehicle, you want exceptional reliability.
There is nothing worse than breaking down, getting stuck or having to constantly battle with an endless stream of repairs. Understandably, you want a reliable 4x4 when you’ve spent thousands - if not tens of thousands - of pounds on one. Plus, it’s quite likely that your 4x4 is your one given mode of transport, used for commuting or even in your day-to-day business operations.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at - and celebrate - the most reliable 4x4s on the market today.
Toyota Land Cruiser
One of many Toyotas to make this list, the Land Cruiser is synonymous with reliability. Rugged and known for its off-roading ability, this model may not be rapid or flash, but it gets the job done. It also came a joint fifth in the What Car? Reliability Survey 2021, plus, when reviewed by AutoExpress earlier this year, they gave it 4.8 out of 5 for reliability and safety.
According to the Toyota website, you can expect roughly 27.6 to 29.4 mpg.
Mazda CX-5
Not only do people consider the Mazda CX-5 a great 4x4, but it’s considered to be one of the best vehicles you can buy full stop. Coming third in the AutoExpress 2021 Driver Power survey, its popularity stems from how reliable it is on the road, thanks in no small part to how well built it is. For driver satisfaction in the same survey, the Mazda CX-5 scored a whopping 91.65% with drivers.
Depending on which model you opt for, you can get between 35.3 and 50.2 mpg.
Toyota Hilux
Another Toyota entry that gives you reliable performance over fancy frills, the Hilux is a truck that screams to be put to work. It gained fame as an “indestructible” 4x4 on Top Gear, where it was battered, drowned and set on fire but still kept going. When Carbuyer.co.uk reviewed the Hilux pickup earlier this year, they gave it 4 stars out of 5 for reliability and safety - a commendable result as part of a positive review.
A new Toyota Hilux, according to the Toyota website, will give you between 31.3 and 32.8 mpg.
Skoda Kodiaq
Coming in at number six on the AutoExpress 2021 Driver Power survey, the basis of this 4x4s reliability is thought to come from VW’s shared MQB platform design. On top of this, the practical features and decent mpg help to make it a firm favourite. What it lacks in perky, agile driving, it makes up for in longevity. As for actual driver satisfaction, it scored a very respectable 90.92% in the AutoExpress survey this year.
According to the Skoda website, you can expect roughly 38.2 to 52.3 mpg, making it one of the best on our list.
Toyota 4Runner
Still one of the most popular 4x4s around, the Toyota 4Runner makes it onto most lists for reliability. Like a lot of classic things from the 80s, it just really works, plus, the 4Runner is the ideal medium-sized 4x4. It wasn’t given much of an update over the years, but that seems to be one of its strengths.
The 4Runner may have been replaced by the Land Cruiser in the UK market, but remains a solid favourite among fans.
Audi Q7
If you want a reliable 4x4 with a luxury feel to it, then the Audi Q7 is the way to go. Because Audi is part of the VW Group, you know that you’ll be getting a high standard of manufacturing with the Q7. It’s no surprise then that this was one of the better luxury vehicles that were placed in the 2020 What Car? Reliability Survey. When AutoExpress reviewed the Q7 last year, it scored 4 out of 5 for reliability and safety, living up to the reputation it has gained.
According to testing carried out by autocar.co.uk, the average mpg for the Audi Q7 is 32.6.
