If you’re in the market for a new 4x4, then look no further than our handy guide to the best 4x4s of 2020. No matter your budget and no matter the type of terrain you’re tackling, there’s a car for you
Lexus RX
A brand associated with luxury, Lexus’ RX model provides plenty of that for 2020. While it might not be the quickest 4x4 on the market, or the most powerful, it delivers a very comfortable ride and an enjoyable drive.
Available only with a V6 petrol engine, the RX delivers 308bhp, which makes for decent performance if slightly less powerful than some of its German competitors. The adaptive suspension can be changed to suit you, so you can be sure of a comfy drive - you’ll barely notice bumps in the road. You won’t notice the engine when driving either, such is the excellent insulation inside, with only tyre/road noise being noticeable.
The interior of the RX is well-designed, and you can tell that they took a tech-focused approach to creating the vehicle. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto mean you can fully-integrate your phone’s apps, and the generously-sized touch screen infotainment system juts out slightly above the centre console, rather than sitting flush, making for a striking look. The screen itself is very responsive, so you needn’t worry about having to jab the screen repeatedly to change the radio station. The seating is comfortable, luxurious and easily-adjustable so you can find the perfect driving position.

All CX-5s come with parking sensors front and rear, and the Sport and GT Sport versions include rear cameras and a 360-degree camera respectively, with the latter showcasing a birdseye view of the car on the central touch screen. A neat safety feature is the fact that the touchscreen cannot be operated while moving; only when you’re stationary - the temptation and distraction of the infotainment system is nullified. All models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
In terms of space, the CX-5 does well. Tall people will have plenty of room in the front, and they’ll also have sufficient room in the back, although it may be a little tight for legroom. The boot is decent sized, if not cavernous, but when the back seats are folded down the storage space vastly increases. The seats fold flush, too, so you needn’t worry about catching anything on dips or edges.
The CX-5 is a well-built, reliable and enjoyable 5-seater 4x4.

Nissan Qashqai
In terms of recognisable 4x4s in recent years, the Nissan Qashqai is hard to beat. A small SUV, it inspired countless others yet remains in the lead when it comes to popularity and quality.
There’s plenty of choice within the Qashqai range: you can opt for a two or four-wheel drive model, and there’s a variety of diesel and petrol engines. There’s six different types of trim, too, so you can cherry-pick your interior and gadgets.
The entry-level engines make for a nippy car, with 1.3 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel versions available. Ride quality is high on the entry-level model, too - it’s ideal for city driving as well as longer pursuits; bumps and divots won’t make a nuisance of themselves here. In the diesel models, efficiency is particularly good - if you’re likely to use the car for long commutes, opt for a diesel over a petrol.
In terms of interior and tech, the higher-end versions of the Qashqai make use of the ProPilot driving assistance system. The car monitors its surroundings and the car itself as you move, alerting you to anything that might require your attention.
The entry-level model is not blessed with groundbreaking technology, but all other versions benefit from dual zone climate control, touchscreen infotainment systems and full smartphone connectivity, all of which can be enjoyed from the comfortable seating.
There’s a reason the Qashqai is one of the most popular vehicles on the market. 2020’s update continues the same high standards as its predecessors.
