Have you been driving your Nissan Navara, only to notice different lights coming up on your dashboard? Plenty of these warning lights can be fairly obvious to diagnose, but given the range of issues being signalled, it can sometimes be confusing. To help you stay safe when out on the roads, we’ve put together this handy guide on Nissan Navara dashboard lights commonly found on the D22, D23 and D40 models.
Please note that these symbols are likely to be similar across multiple Nissan models, but may not always be exactly the same. We recommend you consult your specific owner manual for more information.
Engine Warning Light
A fairly typical symbol for most cars, this light is a blocky representation of an engine and will light up and remain on when there is an issue with your engine.
Airbag Warning Light
A small, seated body with a circle in front of it, the airbag warning light may illuminate briefly on starting the vehicle, but if the light remains on it means there may be an issue with your airbag system.
ABS Warning Light
Your anti-lock braking system helps to stop your brakes from locking up when you are forced to use them in an emergency fashion, allowing you to retain control over the vehicle. When you first start your Nissan Navara, you may find this symbol briefly lights up, but it shouldn’t remain on. If the light flickers or stays illuminated under normal driving conditions, you may need to seek professional help.
Oil Warning Light
A handy light to tell you when your oil level is too low, this small canister symbol will light up if you’re in need of a top-up. If you’ve checked the oil level manually and this symbol still lights up, there may be an issue with the sensor.
Handbrake Light
Commonly found in all vehicles, the handbrake light is simply an exclamation mark inside a circle. It will light up when your handbrake is engaged, but if you notice this light appearing while driving, you could have an issue with the sensor or the handbrake may not be fully down.
Battery Warning Light
Easily recognisable as a small battery (usually with a plus and minus sign), this symbol will illuminate if there is an issue with your Nissan Navara’s battery. You may need professional assistance to diagnose this properly, however, since it could be that the battery is old and in need of replacement or it could be loose connections causing the issue.
Engine Coolant Temperature
A thermometer and some wavy lines might seem slightly confusing, but if this symbol lights up then it means there is an issue with the engine overheating. This can happen if you’ve revved the engine too hard or if you’ve been travelling for a long time - it’s always a good idea to pull over when safe to do so and let the temperature drop.
Seatbelt Warning Light
To help remind you if you haven’t buckled yourself in, this symbol of a person with their seatbelt strapped in correctly will light up. If you’ve correctly buckled your seatbelt and it isn’t loose but the light stays on, there could be a faulty connection causing the issue.
Traction Control Light
Your traction control will automatically be engaged at all times unless you switch it off, in which case the symbol of a car with snaking lines behind it will illuminate. Traction control helps to limit power to the wheels to help avoid skidding. If you’ve tried turning this on but it still lights up, it could mean an issue with the system itself.
Intelligent Key Light
Giving busy drivers an advantage, intelligent key systems allow you to unlock and start your car remotely. The symbol with the word ‘KEY’ and a small image of a key will light up if there is an issue with your key fob or the system within the car itself.
Glow Plug Light
For diesel Nissan Navara models, the glow plug light will illuminate when you start the engine to show this has been activated to warm the engine. This symbol is a depiction of two loops. Should the light flash or remain on while driving, this would signal an issue and should be inspected by a professional.
NATS Light
The NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) light will flash to act as a deterrent to thieves. It essentially means that your vehicle is turned off and that anti-theft technology is activated. It’s a picture of a car with a key in the centre and should only flash when you have left and locked the car. If the light stays on, this means there is an issue with the system.
DPF Light
Your DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) helps to limit emissions, but if you see this symbol light up, it could mean there is an issue that would likely fail an MOT. This means you need to have it checked as soon as possible to ensure it’s in full working order.
