As you’ll already know, choosing the right tyres for your vehicle is important to performance and safety. But what if you need something for off-road terrain? There are two tyre types which fit this category: mud tyres and all-terrain tyres. Both have their uses, but one set will surely be more useful than the other.
This month, at Milner Off Road, we’ll explore these two different tyre types, what their core features are and which terrain they’re most useful for. From there, we’ll leave it up to you to decide which tyres you’ll equip your 4x4 with
All-Terrain Tyres
While there are plenty of tyres out there suitable for the smooth, tarmacked roads in the UK, they won’t help you if you need to traverse a section of muddy or gravel-strewn roads. The all-terrain tyre, on the other hand, is designed to help you on both surfaces, offering enough grip for a lightly muddy road while still being useful on slicker surfaces when there is rain, ice or snow.
It’s all about grip, and with the all-terrain - as long as you aren’t going on a full-on off-roading adventure - these tyres will see you through. They feature smaller treads and narrower voids as part of their design in an effort to give you more options. They might feature smaller treads than full mud tyres but are still available with a more robust, aggressive look to them if that’s what you’re after.
They’re ideal for someone who has to drive around in cities and suburbs but who might also find themselves on a country road every once in a while, thus ensuring you have the right amount of grip.
Other reasons to opt for all-terrain tyres:
- Quieter drive
- Smoother drive
- Ideal for 4x4s and light trucks
Mud Tyres
When you’re out off-roading the last thing you want is to find yourself stuck in the muddy, sandy or rocky surfaces you’re challenged with because of your tyre choice. The mud tyre is designed specifically to tackle the most challenging environments you can find while off-roading.
Featuring larger tread blocks and thicker tyre walls, your mud tyres can get a better grip on loose surfaces as well as sharper surfaces. They’re able to shift whatever stands in their way, clearing mud and giving them something to grip to propel you forward to your goal.
They’re ideal if you’re going off-roading for fun or if you live in an area where the terrain is constantly challenging with mud (at least several journeys in your ordinary week).
Other reasons to opt for mud tyres:
- Aggressive look and designs
- Ultimate match for rocky/muddy roads
- Stability on uneven surfaces
It’s always important to consider the right tyre for your vehicle. Tyre grip can impact the control you have over the vehicle and the quality of the drive. By choosing the wrong tyres you can put yourself and others in danger.
