The changing seasons here in the UK always bring different weather and therefore different conditions. That leaves many people wondering whether they need to change their tyres seasonally to suit conditions.
If you’re a frequent off-roader, you’ll know that the weather can have a huge impact on driving conditions. Whether you drive your 4x4 on farmland as part of your work, live rurally where roads and tracks deteriorate on your private land, or simply enjoy off-roading recreationally, you could benefit from a seasonal tyre change.
This month at Milner Off Road, we’re going to explain what the advantages of changing your tyres in line with the seasons are, when to do it, and what the laws are, if any, around seasonal tyres for 4x4s.
The advantages of changing your tyres
There are such things as summer tyres and winter tyres, but while many road users won’t really see much difference on well-maintained city roads, those on more rural, rugged surfaces could see a range of benefits.
- Better grip - Because they’re made with a softer rubber compound, winter tyres can give you a better grip in the icy conditions we see in winter.
- Safer steering - Following on from the above, the better your grip is, the easier it will be to steer and keep control while off-road, further improving your safety.
- Longer lifespan for tyres - If you keep seasonal tyres on in the wrong conditions (summer tyres in winter, winter tyres in summer) then you will wear them out faster, costing you more money and making your vehicle less safe.
- Improved fuel efficiency - By fitting the right tyres to meet the conditions of the ground, you can get improved fuel efficiency to save you more money.
- Peace of mind - Knowing you have the right tyres on as you’re driving should give you peace of mind as you travel about your day, but it’s also good knowing your vehicle is prepared at the right time of year even when you’re not using it.
When is the best time to change your 4x4 tyres?
While the names of specific tyres should give you an indication of when to change them, it’s not a good idea to simply switch because the season has technically switched. Winter tyres and summer tyres on your 4x4 should be changed when the temperature and driving conditions demand it.
For example, winter tyres are designed to work better when the temperature gets below 7 degrees Celsius. Keep an eye on the weather report and change in late autumn/winter once the temperature drops regularly to this level. You should also assess how muddy, icy or snowy your route out on the farm or off-roading route is before switching.
Similarly, switching back to summer tyres should happen when the temperature gets up over 7 degrees regularly. Don’t just wait for June, as you’re likely to wear winter tyres down more quickly if things have warmed up a little in spring.
Winter tyre laws in the UK
Even though we see snow in most parts of the UK quite regularly in winter - especially at higher elevations - there is no law that demands you must have winter tyres in this country. Only in some parts of mainland Europe is there a law requiring you to fit winter tyres at a certain point to help combat the conditions.
However, despite the lack of legal obligation, it’s always a good idea to change your tyres seasonally if you’re driving a 4x4 in the countryside - whether for work or pleasure - to help keep you safe. The more prepared your vehicle is through acquiring and fitting the right kit, the less likely you are to have an accident or get stuck.
