The Ultimate List Of Off Roading Essentials You Must Have

off-roading-essentials-the-ultimate-guide

I think you’ll agree with me that off roading can be one of the best feelings that you can have in your life. There’s nothing better than taking your vehicle out into the great outdoors, overcoming major obstacles with your best friends, and having a big BBQ at the end of the night

However things go wrong on these trips, and there’s nothing worse than when disaster strikes and leaves you stranded with a broken axle or punctured tyre, cold, wet and covered in mud.

Luckily, there are ways in which you can prepare yourself to avoid such accidents, or at the very least prevent a minor hiccup from turning into a full blown catastrophe – and still ensure there’s time to fire up the grill.

In this post, I’m going to provide you with expert knowledge from true off roading enthusiast, giving you the ultimate list of off roading essentials to ensure that you pack when you’re heading off the beaten track. From caring for your vehicle to looking after yourself, it’s all in here.

So, what do you need to take with you? That all depends on where you’re going, what sort of terrain you’re tackling, and how long for. The equipment listed below is a good starting point to go from to cover all bases. We like to organise our essentials in totes with one dedicated to recovery gear, another to camping, cooking,  and so on. Let’s face it the more stuff you have, the better you’re going to look to all of the other off road enthusiasts on your expedition. Even more so when you’re rescuing them from a ditch!

Before you set off, you must check the following pre-departure check list. Without doing so you may not even make it to the end of the road, never mind the great outdoors.

Pre-departure Checklist

Tools

I can’t emphasize this enough.

When you go off roading, you need a worthwhile tool set with you, even if you’re just going off roading for a day. If you find yourself using the same tools over an over again when making adjustments to your 4×4, then it would be ideal to make sure these are the first things you pack.

  • Gear Oil
  • WD-40
  • Starter Fluid
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid

Camping Essentials

This part of the list is incredibly important.

Being out off roading all day can be extremely tiring, but caught up in the adrenaline of the moment you might not want to get your head down, but it’s vital you do. If you’ve got another big day of driving ahead of you, then you HAVE to be properly rested. Driving when tired is extremely dangerous at all times, and off roading is no different.

If you’re camping on your adventure, you will need the following essentials for your trip.

  • Tent
  • Tarpaulin
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Camp Chair
  • Rope/Ratchet Straps
  • Quick Dry Towel
  • Shovel
  • Axe
  • Saw
  • Fire Lighters (Check the rules on fires beforehand, and always extinguish properly)
  • Pillow
  • Tent Padlocks
  • Air Bed/Camping Bed

Cooking Equipment

When you go off roading, there’s nothing better than sitting round a BBQ with your buddies. However, cooking in the great outdoors isn’t the easiest of things to do, especially if you want something tasty. We recommend you take the following with you.

  • Water Purifier
  • Can Opener
  • Cutting Board
  • Scrubber Sponge
  • Spork
  • Knife
  • Disposal BBQ
  • Washing Up Liquid
  • Cool Box

Camping List For Long Expeditions and Remote Excursions

When going on a long expedition or travelling to remote locations, I recommend that you take the following essentials.

  • Maps
  • Information About The Area You’re Travelling To
  • Compass or GPS
  • Torch
  • Batteries – AA, AAA, C, D and 9V if needed
  • Insect Repellant
  • Lighter and/or matches
  • Firewood
  • Toilet Paper
  • Towel
  • Spare Clothes
  • Folding Camping Chairs
  • Waterproof Clothing
  • Wellingtons
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock
  • Snacks
  • Rubbish Bags
  • Hat
  • Ice and Ice Cooler
  • Tent
  • Tarpaulin
  • Water Purification Pills
  • Antibiotics

It goes without saying that some of this list is dependant on certain things, eg: you may not need wellies for summer in Spain, and you may not need sunblock for December in Yorkshire On the whole though, by working from the list you are well covered for almost any essential item. This will ensure that you have a fantastic, stress free trip, and create a lot of great memories.
