As an owner of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you’ll no doubt have felt the call to go off-roading. Whether your vehicle has strictly been kept to the roads until now or you’re a seasoned pro at off-roading, we’ve got some recommendations for the best off-roading routes in the UK.
There’s something for everyone here, so whether you want to get stuck into the rough, muddy terrain, or you just want somewhere a bit more scenic to drive your 4x4, you’ll find your next adventure here.
Honister Pass in Cumbria
An easier route in summer, but trickier in winter, the Honister Pass in the Lake District offers a variety of challenges.
Whether you like your steep climbs or just enjoy the mountain countryside, snake your way through this region any time of the year - just be sure you’re well prepared for the seasonality to have an impact in its difficulty.
Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire
A favourite with most off-roaders, the Salisbury Plain can provide a simple, scenic route, or some mud tracks for the more daring.
This route winds through Savernake Forest for an easy, gravel-paved drive, but closer to Amesbury - near the A36 and A303 you can find tougher sections to get your teeth into. Be sure to take your OS map with you, since some drivers have been known to get into difficulties while out on the rougher terrain.
Silverstone in Towcester
Famous for Formula 1, Silverstone offers more than just tarmac - here you can find off-roading to match your vehicle and experience level.
This is a purpose-built route for off-roading which features different obstacles and challenges based on what both you and your 4x4 can handle. You don’t need to be a speed racer to enjoy Silverstone after all!
Whitecliff Off Road Centre in Coleford
Looking for an intense ride? Look no further than this quarry off-roading location which is based in Coleford.
Probably not suitable for the beginners and novices, Whitecliff is a centre designed to test experienced drivers who know their engines well. Great fun if you’re seeking a challenge, with water sections and steep ascents aplenty.
Strata Florida in Pontrhydfendigaid
For the most daring of drivers, Strata Florida in Wales is 7 miles of off-roading to be taken seriously.
Featuring a bomb hole, fjord crossings and general water-logged track to tackle, you’ll want to have your wellies handy at certain times of the year. While some portions can be navigated by beginners if they avoid the tougher parts, the weather will likely mean you need a lot more experience.
Bealach na Bà in Wester Ross
Not strictly off-road, but up in the Highlands this route will take you winding through mountains like a mountain goat.
As with any track, the weather is a big part of what makes a route difficult, and this is no different, with the winter months sometimes rendering it insurmountable. If you do go, you’ll be hitting peaks and switchbacks while taking in the scenery on what is known as Pass of the Cattle.
These are just six of our picks to get your wheels into and to lodge some mud and grit into your tread. We’re sure everyone will have a personal favourite - just be sure to prepare before you tackle any route and don’t jump in over your head if you’re a beginner - find someone experienced to guide you.
