This purpose built helical gear transfer box was specifically designed for rear engined off-road race cars.
This lighter unit weighs 30KG which is approximately half the weight of a LT-230 Rover transfer box and represents a weight saving of 28KG (63lbs). It provides nine quick change gear ratios ranging from 2.067 : 1, up to 1.31 : 1, and importantly it reverses the output rotation, which means you do not have to turn the axles over to achieve 5 forward gears and one reverse.
Transfer boxes can be supplied with any of the nine ratios on the change gear chart. For example if you decided on change gears 34T and 36T these would give transfer box ratios of 1.74 : 1 if the 34T gear was installed in the top position and the 36T gear to the bottom, or 1.55 : 1 with the gears fitted the other way around. Other gears are available should your first ratio calculation be a little off the mark. Subsequently, a known suitable gear ratio can be installed for a particular event.
The most common transfer boxes are part no. KK2188RF, and KK2188RM. The ‘R’ means right hand output, the ‘F’ and ‘M’ stand for female and male input shaft respectively. For example a transfer box with a female input shaft would accept the 10 spline mainshaft of a LT-77 or R380 gearbox, the male input shaft would be coupled to a torque flight 3 speed automatic mainshaft to make the overall gearbox - transfer box length as short as possible.
All transfer boxes require a fitting kit to locate them to the main gearbox, fitting kits are listed on the price list and consist of a heat treated aluminium adapter, mainshaft coupler, location dowels, oil seals and level plugs, and all associated fasteners.
In addition to ‘standard’ transfer boxes and fitting kits we also offer alternative propshaft flanges, cv joint flanges and three leg spider type couplings which accepts the ‘GKN’ rubber propshaft joint.
STANDARD ROTATION 'QUICK CHANGE' TRANSFER BOX
This standard rotation purpose built competition transfer box was designed to replace the original heavy transfer boxes used in vehicles such as; Land Rover 90 V8, Toyota Land Cruisers and custom built front engine off-road vehicles. The main objectives were to produce a lightweight helical geared transfer box which was capable of withstanding the extra power and shock loading of this demanding sport.Various gear ratios ranging from 2.09 : 1 up to 1.32 : 1 are selected initially from a gear ratio chart. Ratios can be changed in a matter of minutes - should the first choice of ratios be incorrect. Additional ratios are available to use at different events to achieve the best results from your vehicle.
The transfer box weighs 26.5 KG and the fitting kit 3.3 KG, which is a 50% weight saving on the original set-ups. Having correct gear ratios along with a lighter car can only lead to much faster lap times.

This transfer box was designed with a centre differential to stop power loss associated with axle wind up. This can be used in open diff or locked up depending on the terrain.
This is an ideal transfer box for hill rallies and French events where long road sections between special stages are used.
Weighing 8kg more than the standard remote reverse rotation transfer box it is still lightweight, compact and easy to locate in any chassis or space frame.

ZF – S5 HEAVY DUTY GEARBOX
The ZF-S5 5 Speed gearbox is a relatively lightweight (54kg with V8 conversion and clutch release mechanism etc.) aluminium cased gearbox commonly used in commercial vehicles. The top speed is governed by the tyre size, diff and transfer box ratios. Reverse gear and first gear are opposite from each other, which is sometimes quite handy especially if you are stuck in a ditch and need to get the vehicle rocking to get out of trouble.
Milner Off Road produce a kit of parts to adapt this gearbox to fit primarily into off road race vehicles. The output flange is replaced with a new flange to accept a Land Rover propshaft. The large bellhousing is discarded and replaced with a special short Rover V8 bellhousing. The clutch release mechanism is changed to keep the overall total length of the unit down to 565mm or 22 ¼". The final modifications are to the input shaft, this is removed from the gearbox shortened, re-dimensioned, and then a new spline is cut to take the various clutch set-ups.
For rear engine vehicles, we produce a special gear change linkage, which places the gear lever in the correct position near to hand. At the same time it reverses the gear shift pattern so the gears are in the same standard position as front engine vehicles.
For front engine vehicles, the original gear lever is shortened and bent to the required position to suit the driver. New input shafts and layshaft gears are available to vary the gear ratios spacing
